Animal Trade Between South Africa and Namibia needs permits. (11 November, 1996)

New control measures regarding the movement of animals and animal products between Namibia and South Africa came into force on 1 November 1996. This now means that South African importers of animal and animal products willl need veterinary import permits that are issued in Pretoria. Subjected to the conditions of this import permit, Namibian veterinary officials have to certify compliance with the conditions of the said permit. The original permit and health certificate will be required for veterinary clearance at the border post of entry into South Africa. It was agreed that only the border posts at Vioolsdrift and Nakob will be accepted as official ports of entry.

Meat, including biltong and dried wors for personal consumption, will need only a veterinary health certificate issued in Namibia. Live animals from the 'open' area will be allowed to move from Namibia to South Africa under cover of a veterinary permit and subject to health certification. Livestock Improvement permits will be handled concurrently with Animal Health permits. The onus is on the importer to obtain an import permit. Different conditions will apply for animals from restricted areas in Namibia. The existing arrangements for the movement of dogs and cats between the two countries are not affected.

The new control measures should not be seen as trade restrictions, but rather as an effort towards more efficient veterinary control.
